Barefoot supports the natural growth and function of a horse’s hoof, restoring elasticity and allowing the digital cushion to perform its shock absorbing function. In contrast, shoes restrict flexibility and disrupt the hoof’s natural blood pumping mechanism, leading to decreased circulation and reduced mobility. Additionally, shoes can alter the hoof’s structure, resulting in deformities that cause misalignment. For horses with laminitis, barefoot offers significant advantages by relieving pressure on the laminar attachment, supporting recovery.

A grain-based diet (oats, wheat, barley) can disrupt gut microbiota, induce systemic inflammation, lead to nutrient deficiencies, and cause blood glucose fluctuations, which contribute to the development of conditions such as pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) and equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), colic, laminitis, joint inflammation, and thyroid dysregulation. In contrast, a fiber-based diet (grass, hay, herbs) provides essential nutrients that support optimal physiological function, promoting metabolic stability and preventing these disorders.
